Joseph Smith Lesson 7: Service Project

Joseph Smith Service Project

Plan to spend this family home evening in a service project in honor of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Choose one of the ideas below or create your own project patterned after the service Joseph Smith performed in his life.

· Go to the temple to do baptisms for the dead as a family.

· Go to a family history library and learn more about genealogy.

· Write your testimony in several Book of Mormons and send them to a missionary.

· Give a Book of Mormon to a nonmember that you know.

· Take a pass-along card or a church video to a nonmember neighbor with a plate of cookies.

· Invite a nonmember or part-member family over to share family night with you.

· Visit the gravesites of several deceased relatives. Tell stories about these ancestors, clean up around the area if needed, and leave flowers at the grave.
*Prepare care packages for missionaries serving from your ward.

WHO WE ARE

We are 2 sisters, moms, and teachers who love education and decided to "pool" our resources to share our love of learning. Right now we are living side by side with our combined total of nine kids (and two patient husbands) in a house with a pond in American Fork, Utah. We are thrilled you found us! WHERE THE RUSTY BOAT CAME FROM

You may be wondering where we found Noah’s Rusty Boat. This old boat sits on the property next door to us. I can look out my front window and see it every morning. It belonged to my neighbor who died last year. He was affectionately called Crazy Tim. Crazy Tim was a land-locked hippy who longed for the beach. He was an interesting person who marched to the beat of his own drum. I miss him. I miss the vegetables that he would set on my doorstep each fall. I miss the lamas and the pigs and the turkeys that he would care for on his overgrown patch of earth, filled with treasures that only a vagrant artist could love. He saw beauty and usefulness in things that I often miss.

The boat reminds me that I need to prepare for the future. It reminds me that if I wait too long, it will be too late. It reminds me that all God’s children are unique and need to be loved. It reminds me that God has a plan for each of us and we need to get on with the business of finding it, setting sail on our own heavenly treasure hunt. You never know what you’ll find, just around the corner, down the road, or across the street.
